Estero Island

Estero Island, also known as Fort Myers Beach, is a barrier island located off the southwest coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of Lee County and encompasses the town of Fort Myers Beach. The island is connected to the mainland by the Matanzas Pass Bridge. The area is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and diverse range of recreational activities.

Historically, Estero Island was inhabited by the Calusa Native American tribe before European exploration and settlement. The island’s history is intertwined with that of Fort Myers, with both areas experiencing significant development during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven largely by the growth of the fishing and tourism industries.

As of the latest census data, the population of Fort Myers Beach is approximately 6,000 residents, although this number swells considerably during the peak tourist season. Housing on Estero Island primarily consists of single-family homes, condominiums, and vacation rentals, catering to both permanent residents and seasonal visitors.

Estero Island offers a plethora of activities for residents and visitors alike. Its beaches are the main draw, with soft white sands and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports such as kayaking and parasailing. Nature enthusiasts can explore nearby parks and nature preserves, while fishing enthusiasts can enjoy both offshore and inshore fishing opportunities.

The island boasts a variety of shops and restaurants catering to all tastes and budgets. From casual beachfront cafes serving fresh seafood to upscale dining establishments offering gourmet cuisine, there’s something for everyone. Popular shopping areas include Times Square and Santini Marina Plaza, where visitors can find boutiques, souvenir shops, and art galleries.

Education on Estero Island is provided by Lee County Schools, with several public and private schools serving students from kindergarten through high school. Additionally, there are opportunities for higher education at nearby colleges and universities.

In terms of safety, Estero Island generally has a low crime rate compared to national averages. However, as with any tourist destination, visitors should take common-sense precautions to ensure their safety and security.

The cost of living on Estero Island is relatively high compared to other parts of Florida, primarily due to its desirable waterfront location and tourism-driven economy. Housing prices, in particular, tend to be above the national average, although rental options are available for those seeking more affordable accommodations.
